This blog charts my journey through the Forestry Commission’s Graduate Scheme. I was immersed in the study of Classics at university for many years (at the Universities of Edinburgh and Manchester, as well as the British School at Rome), but have now embarked on a very different adventure as I enter the wonderful world of Silviculture. Forestry is quite new to me, and the Graduate Scheme of the English Forestry Commission will expose me to every aspect of the work being undertaken – from on the ground activity, recreation, wildlife preservation and control, land management, future forest planning, stakeholder relations and many other crucial functions.

  1. A fascinating blog Ruth. Reading your final entry on 6 July 2016 made me feel really sad for you, leaving such a beautiful area.

I actually live in the New Forest so I can fully appreciate its beauty and appeal, which makes me able to understand more your sorrow of having to leave.

You are continuing your fantastic career in another part of the country, so I wish you luck with that.
